Department of Albanian Studies

Programs of Study – Undergraduate Studies

During their studies, students will learn Albanian and various areas of grammar, but a large number of lessons will also be devoted to speaking. They will become familiar with the field of Albanian Studies and learn many interesting things about the Albanian-speaking world, history and culture, as well as the centuries-old relationship between Serbs and Albanians. They will also study Albanian literature from different historical periods. During their undergraduate studies, students will also master aspects of non-literary and literary translation, thus preparing themselves for their future work. Given our department’s collaboration with other universities, during their studies, students will have the opportunity to attend Albanian language seminars in Pristina and Tirana, where they will become acquainted with Albanian culture, language, history, and tourism. As part of these seminars, numerous trips are also organized for students.

History

The first initiative to introduce Albanian language studies in Serbia came in 1905, when the Great School formally became the University of Belgrade, which then passed a decree introducing the teaching of Albanian language and literature. On May 30 1925, the Council of the Faculty of Philosophy decided to establish the Seminary for Albanian Philology, which was entrusted to Dr. Henrik Barić. After the founding of the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade in the academic year 1960/61, the Seminary for Albanian Philology continued its work as the Department for Albanian Language and Literature.

Library

In 2008, the library of the Department of Albanian Language and Literature had more than ten thousand titles, of which 8,500+ were monographs. After the audit in 2013, it was discovered that the fund was halved, and after the regular collection maintenance and weeding in 2023, 7,600 records (4,700+ monographs) were counted - almost a thousand more than in the previous audit. It is expected that weeding will include 1,600 records (dropping the expected records count to 6,000). Acting librarian has passed the professional exam and holds the professional title of a graduate librarian. Library is used by students of Albanian studies, as well as research and teaching staff. As both the reading room and the library are used for lectures, exercises, consultations and exams, we ask our patrons to search the catalogs (paper in front of the Department Secretariat, and/or the. OPAC through the hyperlink below) and submit record signatures via email at least one working day in advance to albanologija@fil.bg.ac.rs
