Department of Germanic Studies

General information

The inception of the Department of Germanic Studies dates back to 1839, when the German language was introduced into the curriculum of the Lyceum. The Special Department of the German Language, as it was then called, was founded in 1852, and with the transformation of the Lyceum into the Great School in 1863, German was taught as part of the General History of Literature. Later, a separate study course ‘German Language and Literature, Literary Theory’ was established. Of the renowned professors who taught at the Department of German Studies during the first years of the University of Belgrade's existence (since its establishment in 1905), Miloš Trivunac and Pero Slijepčević were especially prominent. After the retirement of Prof. Pero Slijepčević in 1958, Prof. Miljan Mojašević was elected as Department Head. Over the years, the Department of Germanic Studies has been headed by, among others, Prof. Jovan Đukanović, Prof. Zoran Žiletić, and Prof. Slobodan Grubačić.

The Department of Germanic Studies has a developed network of international collaboration, primarily with German-speaking countries, as well as cooperation with German cultural institutions, such as the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Goethe-Institut Belgrade, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Austrian Embassy, and many others.

The Library of the Department of Germanic Studies has over 35,000 books and 190 journal titles.
