| The goal | Introducing students to Slovak literature in the period of classicism and romanticism. Acquiring knowledge about European classicism, pre-romanticism and romanticism and dominant philosophical postulates and fitting Slovak literature into a broader context. Acquiring the ability to interpret the work of Slovak classicists and romantics.Training in the use of scientific and professional literature in this field, adoption of philosophical and literary-theoretical concepts that are applied when analyzing poetic, prose or dramatic texts. | |||
| The outcome | The student can understand the social and political situation of Slovaks in the 19th century, recognize and characterize the most significant representatives of classicism and romanticism and the characteristics of their poetics; acquire knowledge about their political, social and literary activity and participation in the revolution of 1848/49. | |||

| Contents of lectures | The subject includes classicism in Slovak literature, the dispute over prosody, inspiration from folk art, perspectives for the development of Slovak culture and the idea of Slovenian reciprocity, Slovak classicist poetry and drama, the presence of elements of pre-Romanticism in classicist authors, as well as romantic poetry.It deals with the circumstances of the development of classicist and romantic literature, the second codification of the Slovak literary language, and the significance and consequences of the revolution of 1848/49. | |||
| Contents of exercises | Analysis and interpretation of selected classicist works and works with elements of pre-romanticism (poetry by J. Kolar, P. J. Šafárik, J. Holí, drama by J. Halupka) and the most significant works of Slovak romanticism (hymns, revolutionary, intimate and patriotic poems by J. Kralj, J. Botto, A. Sladković, S. Halupka, prose works by J. M. Hurban and J. Kalínčiak). | |||
