      The goal This course introduces students to the terminology, key concepts, and central topics in the study of heritage language, as well as to the dominant research trends that shape this relatively young field. Through critical analysis and evaluation of existing studies on heritage language, students develop their research competencies, gain an understanding of the role of a transdisciplinary approach in heritage language research, and further prepare for independent research and practical work.
      The outcome General learning outcomes – An increased level of professional competence; students’ ability to think scientifically, professionally, and critically, and to independently engage in research activities. Specific learning outcomes – Students identify, interpret, and critically analyze key topics related to heritage language research, evaluate the quality of available studies, and identify phenomena and processes that require further investigation. They propose creative and relevant research questions on heritage language and design a research project plan, with support from the instructor if needed. In addition, students are prepared to apply their knowledge in practical instructional activities that enhance the communicative competence of heritage language speakers.
      Contents
      Contents of lectures The concept of heritage language. Heritage language acquisition. Individual and social factors in heritage language acquisition and learning. Identity of heritage language users. Specific features of heritage language instruction. Contemporary interdisciplinary interpretations of concepts such as diaspora, ethnicity, ethnic identity, language loyalty, language insecurity, heritage language maintenance/shift. The history of scholarly work on Serbian as a heritage language. Characteristics of the Serbian linguistic diaspora.
      Contents of exercises Discussions and debates on key concepts and processes related to the acquisition, development, and maintenance of a heritage language. Analysis of different cases of heritage language users. Preparation of a research project plan.
