The goal To provide students with a concise and practical overview of China’s long and complex history and its dynastic periods, establishing a chronological framework into which they can subsequently integrate more detailed knowledge about specific aspects of Chinese culture as they acquire it. To introduce students to the fundamentals of significant socio-economic and cultural processes that have shaped Chinese society throughout history. To enable students to engage critically with academic literature, particularly regarding frequent scholarly disagreements concerning historical facts.
The outcome The student is able to outline the general periodization of Chinese history, the fundamental characteristics of significant periods, and key information regarding notable figures and phenomena. They are capable of situating significant figures and events within their appropriate historical periods, critically discussing the development of Chinese society, identifying the causes and consequences of historical events, and connecting significant events, figures, and phenomena within the context of their mutual historical, socio-economic, and cultural influences.
