| The goal | Introducing students to Romantic poetry and prose, and poetic, prose and dramatic works in the era of realism. Acquiring knowledge about the socio-political and cultural situation in the 19th century. | |||
| The outcome | The student acquires knowledge about literature in the era of Romanticism and Realism, acquires skills in reading and interpreting literary texts and identifying the most striking features of the poetics of individual authors, and acquires the ability to place the analyzed works in a broader European context. | |||

| Contents of lectures | The course deals with the circumstances of the development of Romantic literature, the second codification of the Slovak literary language and the significance and consequences of the revolution of 1848/49, as well as an introduction to the socio-political situation after the revolution of 1848/49 (Bach's absolutism, the founding and work of the Slovak National Union) and with the changes in literature in the transitional period between romanticism and realism; the circumstances and stages of the development of realistic literature (Martin Center, Classicist movement), representative works of literature of the original period and idealistic and critical realism, and the most significant authors. | |||
| Contents of exercises | Analysis and interpretation of the most significant works of Slovak Romanticism (hymns, revolutionary, intimate and patriotic poems by J. Kralj, J. Bot, A. Sladković, S. Halupka, prose works by J. M. Hurban and J. Kalinčjak) and representative works of the main representatives of idealistic and critical realism (S. H. Vajanski, P. O. Hviezdoslav, M. Kukučin, B. S. Timrava, T. Vansova, J. G. Tajovski, J. Čajak, G. M. Petrovski, VHV). | |||
