| The goal | The objective is to acquaint students with the fundamental tenets of Chinese philosophy of art—a tradition that, since the Six Dynasties period (220–589 CE), has been imbued with a Neo-Daoist philosophical spirit. Through the study of works such as *Notes on Ancient Paintings* and *The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons*, students will gain insight into the essential categories of Chinese art, thereby delving into the very nature of the artwork itself. | |||
| The outcome | The student acquires knowledge about the foundations of Chinese art. | |||
| Contents | ||||
| Contents of lectures | The ancient Chinese conception of beauty; the relationship between energy and harmony, cosmic breath and rhythm, and the "skeleton" versus the content of a work. This discussion will examine the ideas of Xie He, Gu Kaizhi, and Zong Bing, with a particular focus on the notion that any work of art—whether music, painting, architecture, or literature—serves as a "transmission of the vibrations of the divine spirit." Through numerous examples from the Chinese artistic corpus, it will be demonstrated that ancient Chinese thought clearly distinguished between the art of creation and the art of imitation. Consequently, Chinese art was not viewed merely as a means to nourish the soul, provide entertainment, or offer solace, but rather as an art form that embodies profound thought. | |||
