The goal The main objective is for students to acquire translation competences, that is, a set of different skills involving both linguistic and extralinguistic knowledge. At this level, this means acquiring basic competence in translating non-specialised texts from Spanish into Serbian and from Serbian into Spanish, and enabling students to: - use translation as a means of improving their knowledge of Spanish in general and their written competence in particular; - understand the basic differences between Serbian and Spanish; use dictionaries, parallel texts and online sources.
The outcome Students demonstrate, through pre-exam activities and particularly in the final exam, that they have acquired the knowledge needed to translate a given text, starting from comprehension of the text and of linguistic and cultural differences and proceeding to the final formulation of the translation, while observing all other relevant parameters such as orthography and style.

Methods of teaching As this is the first translation course the students take, particular emphasis is placed on those aspects of Spanish and Serbian that pose the greatest difficulties in translation. The core of the work consists of translating phrases and paragraphs. Translations are done in class and independently, and the solutions are analysed jointly. Translation exercises also serve to improve students' linguistic and cultural knowledge. Occasionally, translation in the reverse direction is practised in order to address specific linguistic difficulties.
