The goal Students will become familiar with the origins and the "six categories" (*liu shu*) of the Chinese script. This entails mastering characters based on: pictorial representation (*xiang xing*), the indication of concepts or events (*zhi shi*), semantic combinations (*hui yi*), phonetic representation (*biao yin*), the transfer of meaning and modification of form (*zhuan zhu*), and the borrowing of phonetic values (*jia jie*). Each of these categories introduces students to a specific aspect of the development of the Chinese script.
The outcome The student acquired knowledge of the basics of the Chinese script.
      Contents
Contents of lectures Through a series of lectures, this course reconstructs the complex development of the Chinese script, which evolved in three stages: the creation of form (*xing*), the determination of meaning (*yi*), and the assignment of a specific phonetic value (*shengyin*). The course examines characters from the first stage—"early pictographs"—which possess a distinctly pictorial structure; characters from the second stage, formed through "associative compounding"; and characters from the third stage, which are largely characterized by the presence of "phonetic units." While the earliest pictographs are linked to the direct perception of the external world, later stages involve a combination of pictorial representation and symbolic meaning.
